Gerry Daniel  > 2008 - An image a day > 2008 Daily Photo Community
The photographs in this gallery originally appeared in separate monthly galleries for 2008. The photographs were part of a year-long project to take a photograph a day and post it to a monthly gallery.

The photographs featured here are a subset of the original monthly galleries for 2008. They are sorted in reverse, by date which means the oldest photographs are at the end.

Gerry Daniel > The month and the year are about over. Tonight, I went back to the drops. It is getting easier to setup for it and get the shots. There is little post processing needed, just the usual curve adjustment, contrast, brightness, hue, saturation, and sharpening. I only took one group of shots tonight. The first group usually lets me know what to go back and adjust but I was too lazy tonight to take a second group of shots.

Today's song is from one of my favorite albums from this year. The song is by Greg Laswell, the title is "It's Been a Year" from the "Three Flights from Alto Nido" album. There really isn't a bad song on the whole album. I like the music, the arrangements, the instruments, the vocals, and the lyrics. It's just a great vibe throughout - if you want something new, give it a shot.
Gerry Daniel > On the drive home I stopped and took a few shots of some old windows. Something about this one was my favorite.

Today's song is by City and Colour, the title is "Waiting..." from the "Bring Me Your Love" album.
Gerry Daniel > I had a lengthy caption here but deleted it. Sometimes it's like that.

More often than not, the caption has been more of a journal for me. That being said, I assume that on any given day, some people will like the caption, some people won't like the caption, and some people will ignore it. That seems like a pretty fair deal to me.

Today's song is by The Weepies, the title is "Rocks and Water" from the "Live Session (iTunes Exclusive) - EP" album.
Gerry Daniel > It might have been a good day to take a short trip to shoot some photographs at one of the nearby state parks. Opportunity and motivation weren't quite in balance so morning became afternoon and I hadn't made the effort needed for one of those trips. Not that it was bothering me. They were just options.

As I get to the end of 2008, like most people, the year has been the typical mixture of gains and losses. It may seem trivial to some people, but photography played a big part in my struggle to find some balance in my life. After so many years of parenting every day, you can forget how to take time for yourself. With mobile phones and email, it's getting harder to get away from work, we have electronic tethers. Mental fatigue and stress are common. Anxiety and depression seem to be on the rise. It is increasingly hard to maintain perspective. But the daily photo community helped keep me involved in an activity that I enjoy and a creative outlet that I need. When I took photographs on January 1, 2008, I didn't know about the daily community, it was just a challenge I had made to myself to take at least one photograph every day for the year. Improve my photography skills and take some time for myself were the basic goals. I think it may have been February before I became aware of the daily photo community. Vandana had somehow come across one of my photos in one of the other commmunities and in the caption I was wishing for a group of people doing something similar. She was kind enough to take the time to tell me about this group and encouraged me to join.

Looking at the basic goals for the project, I would say I met those two goals. There is still so much for me to learn but I feel that I made progress with my photography. There is something to be said for the value of hours spent gaining experience at an activity. I never expected to make so many friends along the way, but I has no way of knowing about the kindness and support from the people in this community. So, looking forward to 2009, I can't imagine not continuing this project. This group is like extended family. So, I am in for another year.

Today's song is by Steve Tannen, the title is "Sing Me to Sleep" from the "Big Senorita" album. I have been listening to the music through ear buds tonight because there are video games going on in the next room (kids home from college for the holidays). It is amazing how much of the details you can miss in the music when you listen through speakers.

Yeah, I know, I tend to ramble sometimes. Before somebody makes a remark about it being a sign of age, I have been rambling since I was very young. It's a function of a mind that has a lot of different things going on at the same time, it never stops.
Gerry Daniel > In a break with my normal routine of taking photos and staying behind the camera, this is a rare glimpse of me and the unfortunate people that have to tolerate me in real life. This was actually taken on Christmas Eve because there were scheduling issues with everyone. From my point of view, it just means we get to open gifts early which is a plus.

The past year in the daily photo cummunity has been so much fun and a great experience for me. There are so many talented photographers and wonderful people in the group. It is a treat to have an opportunity to get to know all of you and have a chance to see your photographs. You have all helped me improve my skills.

I wish all of you a safe and happy holiday season.

Today's song is a repeat selection but I like the vibe and mood of the song. The song is by Fleet Foxes, the title is "Blue Ridge Mountains" from the "Fleet Foxes" album.

Peace.
Gerry Daniel > To escape the holiday chaos, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens provide a nice sanctuary. My big decision was whether to shoot inside or outside. With warmer weather expected later this week, I opted to shoot inside the greenhouse. This photograph was in the wing of the greenhouse that is dedicated to camellias. It was an overcast day so the light inside was soft and muted. This photo features one of the many varieties of camellias that are housed in that area of the greenhouse.

Today's song is by Papercuts, the titlle is "Outside Looking In" from the "Can't Go Back" album. I know that many of these songs aren't by familiar artists. There is something a bit more honest and unfiltered about the lesser known artists. They don't have record companies tinkering with their music, they are making music for themselves and their fans. It takes a little work to discover these treasures but it is well worth the time.

Gerry Daniel > This afternoon, I went to one of my favorite places to take photographs, Birmingham Botanical Gardens. There is a stream that flows over mostly over rock in the woods at the Gardens. My intent was to shoot the stream, which I did. I have a few nice photographs of the stream from the afternoon. Hopefully I will have some additional images to post in one of the galleries. My primary focus was on the stream and the rocks. As I was moving from one spot along the side of the stream to another spot, I happened to look down at the rocks. There was a leaf lying on the rocks, saturated with water with the underside of the leaf facing upwards emphasizing the veins in the leaf. Today's photo is that leaf. It's just a wet leaf, lying on a wet rock beside the stream. This time of year, the woods are filled with leaves lying on the ground, I could have easily missed this one.

Today's song is by The Dodos, the title is "Walking" from the "Visiter" album.
It might have been a good day to take a short trip to shoot some photographs at one of the nearby state parks. Opportunity and motivation weren't quite in balance so morning became afternoon and I hadn't made the effort needed for one of those trips. Not that it was bothering me. They were just options.
