Gerry Daniel  > 2008 - An image a day > 2008 Daily Photo Community
The photographs in this gallery originally appeared in separate monthly galleries for 2008. The photographs were part of a year-long project to take a photograph a day and post it to a monthly gallery.

The photographs featured here are a subset of the original monthly galleries for 2008. They are sorted in reverse, by date which means the oldest photographs are at the end.

Gerry Daniel > As a general rule, my daily photo choices don’t often feature much in the way of filter effects that alter the photograph to any significant degree. That doesn’t mean I don’t experiment with certain shots trying to maybe reveal something that is beyond the shot straight from the camera. There are many of you in the group that are much more artistic than me in your skills and use of those tools. While I was working with this shot, I tried a combination of filters that initially didn’t seem to work. After a bit of tweaking with a few of the settings, I found something that seemed to fit.

There have been a range of opinions expressed in the daily group about post processing and everybody is entitled to their opinion. What I see in this group is not the use of post processing to mask an inferior image but rather creative use of post processing to extend the range of an image. Since photography qualifies as a creative and artistic expression, I see nothing wrong with how someone chooses to interpret their work through the tools available.
Gerry Daniel > Yesterday, I wasn’t able to take any photos. I had oral surgery early yesterday morning and was pretty much out of it all day. This morning and early afternoon were rough but late this afternoon I was feeling well enough to get out and take a few pictures. Luckily tomorrow is Friday and I have the weekend ahead of me.

Lately I have been happier with the way my photos have made the transition from what I wanted to shoot and the way the actual image has emerged. I still have a long way to go but it’s nice to feel some progress along the way.
Gerry Daniel > This afternoon it was raining when I went to take the photographs for the day. Shooting in the rain is fun and offers so many different opportunities for shots.

Other than the shot that is my daily photo, the other contenders were some variations of water lily photographs. They are posted in the “Water Liles” gallery.

Tonight’s song is by Po’ Girl. The title of the song is “Mercy” from the “Vagabond Lullabies” album.
Gerry Daniel > This afternoon was a bit overcast which left me with an overall soft light. After my experimentation yesterday trying to learn something about using Lab Color, for now it isn’t something that seems to be an enhancement for my images. There may be situations in the future where it might have some benefit but I am filing it away for now. But going through a different workflow trying to learn about processing with Lab Color let me take a fresh look at my current processing without Lab Color. It gave me a few ideas on tweaking my own process. Tonight is the first time those ideas were incorporated into my process. There are so many possibilities out there but I am starting to get a feel for what direction I need to take my images to try and get the results I want.

A quick note about the water lily in the daily photo for today is something I learned from one of the wonderful people that work at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. This particular type of water lily initially blooms completely white. On each day, more color will be introduced to the petals. I am going to try and follow the progression on the two white water lilies that are in bloom.

Tonight’s song is by Steve Tannen. The title is “Sing Me to Sleep” from the “Big Senorita” album.
Gerry Daniel > With the exception of my first image in the gallery for this month, my images that are something other than water lilies seem to generate less interest than my photos of water lilies. I learned some new techniques using Lab Color and experimented with several shots. With an admittedly small sample, at this point I still prefer my current workflow over the techniques that included using Lab Color. As I move along, I will continue to revisit the Lab Color process. In a way, it was good to see that for my shots, I seem to be getting the results I want with my non-Lab Color methods. Don’t misunderstand, I am not knocking Lab Color and can see where it could be useful in certain photos.

Today’s song is by Bon Iver. The song is titled “For Emma” from the “For Emma, Forever Ago” album.
Gerry Daniel > In case anyone wonders what has happened to my water lily photos, I took some today but I haven’t processed them yet. Most of my shots this morning were in a different area of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. We had a delightfully cool morning and it felt nice to take photographs and not be burning up or sweating. The cooler air also gave us a beautiful blue sky. My choice for the daily photo was ultimately related to the unbelievable shade of blue in the sky this morning. Despite what any of you might think, I was not shooting with a polarizing filter and have done nothing at all to enhance the sky. When I got ready to process the images, the color of the sky shocked me. I called my wife into the room to show her the RAW files because I didn’t believe what I was seeing and I figured she would accuse me of doing something in Photoshop to boost the blue.

So other than correcting for hue, contrast, brightness, slight sharpening, and cropping, this is pretty much straight from the camera. I have some wonderful shots of an unusual flower called a spider lily and I will post them in my Bonus Tracks gallery (http://gldaniel02.smugmug.com/gallery/5468840_XzWBE/1/348462846_8sFvZ). I will work on the water lilies from today at some point over the next several days. I am scheduled to have some minor surgery on Wednesday (August 13th) and will pretty much be out of it all day.

I can’t say it enough or too often. The daily photo community is a wonderful, supportive group that has meant more to me and my photography than I could ever express. Thanks for all you contribute and for the time you take to look at my photos.

Today’s song selection is by The Weepies. The song is titled “Old Coyote” from the “Live Session (iTunes Exclusive) - EP” album.
Gerry Daniel > Captions have been a struggle for me this week. Today continues the trend.

Tonight’s song is “Hear Me Sing” by AM & Buddy from the “Side by Side – Duets, Vol. 1” album.
Gerry Daniel > Today was a day that I almost skipped. My mood wasn’t the best and my motivation was low. I am going through some kind of personal funk. There is a significant element of mental fatigue that has been building for a while. Photography and music are my refuge. We had a rainstorm this afternoon so I waited until it was over and shot after the rain.

Tonight’s song is by Chris Pureka. The title is “Cynical” from the “Driving North” album.
Gerry Daniel > At least today I have a song to share. It is another one from The Be Good Tanyas. The song is titled “Horses” from the “Chinatown” album.
