Gerry Daniel  > 2008 - An image a day > 2008 Daily Photo Community
The photographs in this gallery originally appeared in separate monthly galleries for 2008. The photographs were part of a year-long project to take a photograph a day and post it to a monthly gallery.

The photographs featured here are a subset of the original monthly galleries for 2008. They are sorted in reverse, by date which means the oldest photographs are at the end.

Gerry Daniel > This morning, I spent almost 3 hours at Tannehill State Park taking photographs. It's a beautiful park, very scenic, lots of history. It was a little chilly but still pleasant. When I left, I felt confident that I had a ton of great shots. At the time, I anticipated struggling to pick a favorite from so many great photos. I should know better than to predict how the images will look once I get back to the computer. So instead of debating which photo to choose, it became a debate about whether to post a photo at all. It was a challenging lighting situation, lots of contrast between very bright areas and very dark areas, lots of shadows. But a more skilled photographer could have gotten more from the situation. It wasn't a lack of effort, it was more a series of bad decisions about how to shoot a particular scene.

But, it got me outside, walking in the woods, enjoying the scenery. There are worse ways to spend a morning. Anyway, this is the photo I chose for today. It was this or nothing.

Today's song is by Citizen Cope and Santana, the title is "Son's Gonna Rise" from "The Clarence Greenwood Recordings" album.
Gerry Daniel > The way the day went by, I only took a few photographs this afternoon. We have passed the peak for autumn colors. Some colors remain, the trees and the leaves change on their own individual schedules. There is beauty in the lack of an organized effort. But I am not what you could call the most organized person. To some degree I have a natural resistance to organization. It goes way back with me, I had to learn to blend. You have to pick your battles. Yeah, that's experience talking, I have not always won the battles I have chosen. But I have learned much from the lost battles. Humans are pretty good at adapting.

John (300m) had an image a few days ago that he posted in the dailies that was a beautiful studio shot. Take any day in this community and the quality of the work in these galleries is nothing short of amazing. There are so many photos, just in 2008, that are stunning. Then you have the overflow from the dailies that end up in other galleries. The overflow galleries are filled with even more exceptional images. It is almost overwhelming. I often wonder if the people at SmugMug have the time to see the work in the dailies. They have provided this wonderful environment for us to come together and have a home for our images. I hope my images have a home here for a long time.

Today's song is by City and Colour, the title is "Comin' Home" from the "City and Colour - Live" album.
Gerry Daniel > Technically, this photo is from yesterday. This is a gazebo by a trail that goes to the lake in our subdivision where I took the leaf photographs yesterday morning.
Gerry Daniel > We had rain last night, so I was awake this morning before sunrise to shoot photographs. I had hoped that we would have a mist on the lake in our subdivision, but the weather wasn't quite right to produce that effect. Once it was light enough, I walked the trail alongside the lake looking for leaves with droplets of rain. For some reason they fascinate me. By the time I was ready to go back home, I had quite a few shots. As all of you know, one of the struggles with the daily photo project is where to house other images that deserve to be displayed somewhere. With that in mind, I decided to create a gallery for the raindrop images. The new gallery is called "Liquid Sunshine - Raindrops" and images will be added on an ongoing basis.

Working through these images I found myself going back and forth between color processing and black & white processing. In some cases, I like both treatments equally well so it's hard for me to choose one over the other. But for the daily photo gallery, I can only choose one. If you like the raindrop photos, I invite you to check the new gallery. You may like some of those images better than the one I chose for this gallery.

I have been listening to so much new music lately, it is amazing how many talented artists are producing nice music and most of it you will never hear on regular radio or on satellite radio. Tonight's song is by a band called Wild Sweet Orange, the song is titled "Ten Dead Dogs" from the "Ten Dead Dogs - Single" release. Don't let the title discourage you, it's a song about life.
Gerry Daniel > It's Friday, the weekend has started, and the caption is back. We are expecting rain tonight, so hopefully more photos of wet stuff tomorrow. Today was mostly overcast but the light was nice. If you haven't been to the Bonus Tracks and B-sides - 2008 - 2nd Six Months gallery in a while, I have been throwing some extras in there.

Today's photo is the first water lily I have shot in a while. It is a bit different in that the colors of the lily pads are changing like the other leaves. I don't know that I ever noticed that before.

Today's song is by Brett Dennen, the title is "Can't Slow Down" from the "So Much More (Special Edition)" album. The song has a nice mellow vibe to it.
