Gerry Daniel  > 2008 - An image a day > 2008 Daily Photo Community
The photographs in this gallery originally appeared in separate monthly galleries for 2008. The photographs were part of a year-long project to take a photograph a day and post it to a monthly gallery.

The photographs featured here are a subset of the original monthly galleries for 2008. They are sorted in reverse, by date which means the oldest photographs are at the end.

Gerry Daniel > It's been a few days since I have taken the time to write a caption. It's a mood issue most of the time. Other times, it might be that I just have nothing to say. Reflection photos are some of my favorite types of images. This afternoon I was walking along the bank of a stream and trying to catch some of the autumn colors in the sun.

I still have a number of images from the afternoon to work through but I think I am going to stop for the day. When I first looked at the RAW file of this image, the reflection surprised me. It was what I can only describe as a natural watercolor. My intention was to shoot the reflection but with the light, shutter speed, etc. it's hard to know what you have really captured until you get home and can see the image on the computer.

The more I look at this, the less real it seems. I would accuse myself of using some effect to get the watercolor appearance in the reflection but I would have no idea how to create this.

As always, thanks for taking the time to look at my photos and thanks for leaving comments.

Today's song is by Steve Reynolds, the song is titled "Cover of Night" from "The Carnival Papers" album.

Gerry Daniel > The rate of change in the leaf color is increasing by the day. Some trees almost look like they are in flames. It is an amazing show of autumn colors.

The song for today is by Slow Runner, the title is "Trying to Put Your Heart Back Together" from the "Mermaids" album. Definitely worth a listen if you are looking for something new.
Gerry Daniel > Sorry for the late caption. I got up before sunrise and went to Birmingham Botanical Gardens to catch the early morning light on Sunday morning. Many of my shots were made in the Japanese Gardens (like this one). The others that I posted from this session are in the Birmingham Botanical Gardens gallery.
Gerry Daniel > We had beautiful weather today in the Birmingham area. The skies were a beautiful clear blue. A perfect day for shooting nature and capturing the changing colors of autumn. So many great leaves out there, waiting for me, vying to be the daily photo for the first day of November 2008. The collective smugness of the leaves hung in the air. Well, it was clear what I had to do.....yeah, you know, sometimes you have to make a statement. They aren't the boss of me. Maybe I wasn't feeling leafy today. There's no law that I have to feel leafy, not that there's anything wrong with feeling leafy. I am not ashamed to admit that I have my leafy days, I am totally comfortable with my leafy side. As far as the camouflage rumor is concerned, I don't own any camouflage items. It seems wrong to mock the leaves that way. But that's another discussion for a different day.

You know exactly what I had to do. Yep, photograph buildings in Birmingham. On the photographic wheel of subjects, old buildings in a downtown area is right across the spectrum from photographing leaves. So it was an obvious and easy choice.

My idea was to try and find some new perspectives to try and capture in the old buildings. It was a lot of fun. I love old buildings, they have so much personality and character. Old buildings are rarely haughty (leaves, take note).

Today's song is one I think I have chosen on another day but I don't think I have promised that there would be no repeats. The song is by The Weepies, the title is "Living In Twilight" from the "Say I Am You" album.

Before I forget, some of the other photos from today are in the Birmingham gallery .
Gerry Daniel > On a given day, a photo that ends up in a gallery other than the daily photo gallery may have nothing to do with comparative quality of the one that is selected for the daily photo. I have often thought that I am the worst judge of my own photos. It's all subjective anyway, but choices have to be made. With that in mind, I selected this photo for the daily gallery simply there was something about it that seemed right for today. There are a few others that were candidates that will end up in the bonus tracks gallery. For me, it's more than enough that you take the time to look at my photos. If you really like one, that's a bonus for me.

Today's song is by Greg Laswell, the title is "Comes and Goes (In Waves)" from the "Three Flights from Alto Nido" album.
Gerry Daniel > The photo I posted for yesterday was seriously a tough choice. It was posted this morning rather than last night because I was unsure about it. My choices are influenced by my mood, my difficulty in having an objective perspective on my photographs, and some feeling that I fell short of capturing what I was trying to photograph. I would imagine that most of you have similar reservations from time to time.

Todays photo goes back to my interest in the changing leaves, the textures, the tones, and the layers. There was something about this group of leaves that caught my attention. The floor of the woods is covered with leaves. As I walk along, looking for something to shoot, different things will attract my eye. It doesn't always result in something worth shooting. Other than just liking something visually, I am not always able to express why I take some shots. Why these leaves and not another group? Just personal preference I guess.

Today's song is by Fink (UK) - the title is "If Only" from the "Distance and Time" album.
The rate of change in the leaf color is increasing by the day. Some trees almost look like they are in flames. It is an amazing show of autumn colors.
